Zombie Night
Pray for day.
Reviewed by Marshal Earp

It's a post-apocalyptic horror tale in which the survivors of World War 3 discover they're not the only ones left. The chemical aftermath of has caused people to mutate into flesh hungry shadows of their former selves, and the survivors try to find sanctuary in a world overrun by the living dead!

This is the best indie flick to come out since "Dead Life". As a pure zombie film, the story and gore are much better than the above, the acting is not. This is a Canadian film so the accents kind of come off comical at times, combined with the horrendous acting, it takes away from what overall is a very solid flick.

As stated above the world has been wiped out. The opening sequence with all the newscasts detailing the destruction was GREAT! Not for one minute did I think I was watching an indie budget flick during this sequence. The reporters looked downright professional and totally realistic. Amazing attention to detail with no cheese.

The gore is top, TOP notch. I was shocked! These guys really pulled out all the stops with realistic gore. Hats off to the EFX group. The gutmunching here is right up there with Land of the Dead. You think I am joking? I am not joking. There’s is a shotgun blast that takes off a leg that was downright flawless, ouch!

How about the zombies you ask? Beautiful. Saying a zombie is Romero-esque is becoming a clichéd term, however, that’s exactly what these intestine-eaters are. They look wonderful! Bloody, rotting, wounded, ghouls. The way a zombie should look. These zombies do not do anything advanced or unrealistic so you purists like myself will not get annoyed.

The plot was as original as a zombie plot can be. But more importantly was very good. The plot uses a modern fear we all have of chemical and nuclear destruction with a nice zombie twist. It's as good and reasonable a way to explain zombies as there is.

This is a very dark film. There are numerous times I was shocked at how quickly some of the main characters who you were sure are going to make it end up being gruesomely devoured. I got caught off guard by this more than once. It's amazing how often a films plot goes by some predictable formula about what needs to happen. Not the case here. Many repugnant surprise moments. Not twists, just surprises.

Now the bad, as I mentioned above the acting is a horror element all to itself to this flick. Not only was the acting putrid (even for an indie) but many of the characters actions were completely unrealistic. To me that should be the easiest thing to accomplish in a script. I mean come on, put yourself in that situation. For example, if someone in your group was destroying it by doing things like, I don't know, stealing your food and slashing others in the groups throat, would you let this guy live and let him wander free?

Overall this films good outweighs the bad. My prediction is this, some of you will absolutely love this movie, and for good reason, it will captivate many of you. I am on the fence because the things that were off in this are pet- peeves of mine. Make no mistake this is way better than most indies out there and is most definitely worth a look.

First of all, I gotta say, you can tell this is a very low budget movie. The acting was pretty bad in this one. Also, some of the dialogue was pretty corny. There were also some "illogical" flaws in the story. Sometimes, you question yourself, if you missed something. BUT, those are the only bad points in this movie.

On a good note, everything else about this movie was very good. These zombie had to be some of the best zombies I've ever seen in a low budget movie. Some looked very gruesome indeed. The gore effects was top notch, and plenty of it. From the very opening scene, the blood starts spilling and the guts start flying. Lots of zombie munching flesh, and guts being ripped out and munched on. All shown graphically in it's bloody glory.

The storyline was also done very well. It was simple, and not all drawn out like some of these other low budget films. There was never a dull moment throughout this movie. Also, it wasn't predictable.

All in all, this was a very entertaining movie (if you can get past the acting). This is one movie every zombie fan should see. If you're not a zombie fan, I believe you will be after seeing this movie. I highly recommend this.

I give this 7.5 out of 10 zombies who eat leg. Score would of been higher if not for the acting and some of the dialogue.

I did not like this movie as well as you fellas did. The special effects were good. The acting was terrible.

I can live with terrible acting, it was the unpredictability of it all. At one time two people would be cussing each other out, the next minute their argument is forgotten and they are sharing personal feelings. Then they're cussing each other again. Add that to the fact that they could be randomly eliminated at any second. I don't necessarily have a problem with that, since that is fairly realistic. It's hard to gain any continuity though when your main characters are dying off. Again, not a big problem, just a minor annoyance.

The Derek character was the most annoying character I have seen in two and a half years. Totally unrealistic. I felt bad at the beginning because everybody was being unnecessarily cruel to him, but then he starts doing all of these incredibly crazy things. How many chances does this jackass get?

The lack of consistency of all the characters really spoiled it for me. The movie wasn't real original either. A zombie movie doesn't have to be original, but I've already seen several social commentaries of the scenes where biker humans are pushing around and teasing a captured zombie. There were a couple too many reflective moments and morality speeches too.

Overall though, it was a fairly decent movie. It was low budget, BUT it was about zombies and had respectable gore and special effects in it. The shotgun blast was indeed terrific. Overall, I give this 4 out of 10 scenes that were put in the movie just to show breasts.

Zombie Night is one of them movies you would expect to be a waste of time. To me, this movie is so worth the watch. Finally a Canadian made low budget movie that can stand among the rest.

The storyline of the movie is a little sub par, and there is one major blunder where you have to try not to look at the QEW highway running as normal in the back round as the talks of the world coming to end take place.

Other then this I love this movie. I have watched it again and again with friends. This movie brings a real feeling to the screen of what people would have to do in a case such as this. Banding together to stay alive in some warehouses.

The zombies really work for this film really only coming out at night to rain terror. The gore is effective and even had praise from many people about a gunshot amputation scene. The dvd also brings some special features with it that are worth the watch.

All in all i give this movie 8 out of 10 zombies eating brains.
