Deep
in the woods of West Virginia a small production crew is shooting
the pilot episode for a new reality show called The Apocalypse,
which pits contestants against one another to see who the ultimate
survivor is. But as the contestants and crew soon learn, this
reality show is about to become more real than they could every
imagine for hidden deep in the woods is a family that has survived
longer than anyone else and they have survived robbing, killing
and eating anyone who comes into their neck of the woods. Once
again, deep in the Appalachian wilderness, someone has made a
wrong turn and this time it heads straight into a dead end!
I
wasnt a huge fan of Wrong
Turn when it came out a few years ago and I have to admit
I wasnt that thrilled when I heard they were making a direct
to video sequel, but I found this sequel to be not only better
than the first film, but a hell of a lot more fun as well.
Bottom
line Wrong Turn 2: Dead End breaks down as simple as all
other killer, inbreed, cannibal hillbilly movie. A bunch of folks
out in the woods run into a bunch of crazy mountain folk who prune
their own family tree and eat everyone else. The cannibal family
is going to lose a few members along the way and about 95% of
the rest of the cast will meet a fairly grisly end as well. You
know the basic story going in and this flick does little to change
the formula, but its done in a gnarly fashion this time
around.
First
off the kills and blood are great. I saw the unrated edition,
so that made it a little better Im sure, but man there is
some great splatter and gore in this one, gore hounds enjoy! The
story is predictable, but not lame and the reality show aspect
works out fairly decent in the end. The characters are also fairly
stereotypical and you can kind of guess who will be alive by the
end, but its still fun to watch. The actors are fair and
Henry Rollins does a decent job as a retired Marine Captain, and
the females tend to show a decent amount of jiggle and flesh,
but like most horror movies, its the bad guys that make
this one.
The
cannibals in this one are a hoot. Sure theyre evil as hell
but theyre also fun as shit in their actions and deeds.
There is a great dinner scene, a vile look at the love between
brothers and sisters and lots of family bonding accomplished through
the hunting and torturing innocent victims. Also Ken Kirzinger,
who played Jason in Freddy vs Jason, gets a chance to unleash
a little havoc as the monster sized Pa of the cannibal
clan.
I
liked this one quite a bit, its got a good sense of dark
humor to it and it even has a little camp value mixed in that
I found very enjoyable. Add to that the blood and guts and I can
overlook the films other faults and flaws. I say give Wrong
Turn 2 a try for yourself and see what you think.
