The
story of a group of young adults who get stranded and massacred
in the backwoods of West Virginia by a trio of inbred psychopaths.
I enjoyed it very much. After hearing so many negative remarks
about it, I was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining it really
was. Many said it was just like the remake of The
Texas Chainsaw Massacre which is true assuming you don't
watch either film. That's like saying The Godfather and
Goodfellas are the same, it makes you an idiot.
Wrong
Turn has much more in common with The Hills Have Eyes
than any other horror movie as far as plot is concerned. That
is not to say that they are the same, or even derivative. If you've
missed either you should watch both immediately, it would make
for a great double-feature.
The
great thing about Wrong Turn is it's done with modern effects
and a healthy budget, but it's essentially 70's horror. There
is no big twist at the end, the story is pretty much what you
think it is, and damn good at it. The explanation is simple, believable
and not supernatural - a great formula for a slasher flick.
Also
the gore level is higher than most slashers these day, the killing
make you wince a little - which is what a killing should do. I
don't want to cheer or giggle during the kills, I want to be pushed.
I'm desensitized to violence, I need a bigger fix - if it's good
I'll cheer later. The redheaded girl made me wince, it was a good
kill.
Of
course, nudity is apparently illegal in horror movies now. It's
a shame, especially with goddess Eliza Dushku in the film. It
was also nice to see her in a role not so similar to Faith from
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The tough, badass chick thing
is great - but in this one she actually got to show some weakness,
at one point she yells something and her voice cracks and it expressed
a desperation that really made the scene for me.
Eliza's
character is named after the woman in Stephen King's Gerald's
Game
It's
important to point out that I did grow up in WV, and the stereotypes
presented in this film are a slight exaggeration. But only slight.

I
thought the movie was pretty cool. I'm even over the stereotype
that if there were deranged crazy fuckers like that, then they
would probably reside in West Virginia. In the movie's defense,
there are some pretty deep hollers in West Virginia, and I have
seen a crazy fucker or two.
I
thought the situations were a little artificial though. It's been
a couple months since I watched it, so my facts my be a little
inaccurate. I just don't think that under ANY situation you should
break into people's houses and use all their shit. I couldn't
get past that for some reason.
Also,
this is a minor point, but them trees are way too fucking big
to be in West Virginia. People were running back and forth on
the limbs and shit. We tore trees down that size way back in the
70's. Most of the movie was actually filmed in Canada. Anyway,
very small points. Pretty good flick. The violent demises of these
teens were top notch. The saving grace probably.

I
found this film to be terribly disapointing. I also found it extremely
bland. The recipe for succeeding in this particular horror sub-genre
is portrayed in The Hills Have Eyes. It needs to be intense
and disturbing. This film displays none of those qualities. It
was rated R but it might as well have been rated PG-13.
The
scares were weak and the plot was basic and packed no punch whatsoever
to spice it up.
Not
that this is a terrible film. It does have solid acting and nice
cinematagrophy. It's really just an average backwood killers flick,
nothing more. I am surprised at how impressed most people are
with this because quite frankly, what the hell eventful even happens
in this movie?
I
never found myself even remotely emotionaly involved or drawn
in. At any time I could have turned it off and went grocery shopping
without objection. Not recommended for anything more than catching
it on cable during a slow Saturday afternoon.
4
out of 10 repugnant hillbilly's that never do anything shocking.

I'm
a huge fan of Stan Winston. When I found out that he was working
on this movie, naturally I had to see it. I rented the DVD one
weekend and after watching it, I thought that Wrong Turn isn't
just the name of the movie. I looked at it as a warning for anyone
who wants to see this.
The
plot was very weak. I know that the story is about a group of
people who get lost in the woods and encounter a bunch of mountain
men, blah, blah, blah. We've seen that formula umpteen times,
and honestly I have no problem with that formula. If it ain't
broke, don't fix it. I guess my beef with the movie lies with
the way the movie played out. The movie was driven by it's formula
and special effects, but the plot needed more meat.
The
character development was almost non-existant, except for one
scene that was deleted.
The
lack of nudity was also a let down. I was hoping Eliza Dushku
would be at least topless in the film, hell I would have settled
for Emmanuelle Chriqui in a nude scene, but we got diddly. Eli
Roth said that when he saw this movie, and Eliza was on the table
with the mountain men surrounding her, his first thoughts were
"why aren't they ripping her clothes off?" I agree with
him 100%. I am a supporter for nudity in horror movies, when it's
appropriate. If it seems appropriate, it's probably needed. If
it's just for the sake of nudity, keep it on the cutting room
floor.
After
seeing it again, more than a year later (yes, I'm THAT biased),
I have a new respect for this film, but I still hate it. What
I said about plot, character development and nudity still stands,
but looking at the positive in this film makes it a little better.
The acting wasn't too bad. Eliza Dushku makes a pretty good scream
queen, and the rest of the cast also did a very good job.
Stan
Winston is among the best makeup artists in Hollywood, so of course
the effects were top notch. In fact, in some scenes they are almost
unparalleled. The mountain men DO look fantastic, and can be scary
at times. Sadly, for this movie, it seems that special effects
were the driving force behind this movie and not story.
To
quote George Lucas: "A Special Effect without a story is
a pretty boring thing." This
movie proves that.
