Ok,
I admit it. I like kung fu zombies, in the right situations. I
also enjoy a good Abba tune. Sue me. This movie doesn’t
have any Abba, but it’s got some ass kicking zombies, and
that's all right by me.
We have another Japanese zombie movie here, and by all accounts,
these movies are kicking the shit out of other countries in this
grossly underappreciated genre. The storyline is as follows: There
are 666 portals to the other world. Somewhere in Japan is the
444th portal, which is the Forest of Resurrection. Enough said
about that. Cue to the asskickings.
Two inmates (with cool "Lawbreaker" overalls on) are
busted out of prison by the local Yakuza. They eventually meet
up with each other in the aforementioned Forest of Resurrection.
Why the Yakuza busted out these two guys is not really known by
us or even by the people in the movie. It was a direct order from
their mysterious ass kicking boss. One thing leads to another
and then a guy gets capped. Seconds later he returns from the
dead (as if resurrected) and starts whipping ass. After this,
all shit breaks loose.
There is a pretty good plot behind this movie, and I don’t
really want to ruin it for you. Needless to say though, there
is plenty of blood, severed limbs, tons of bullets, ripped out
hearts, fists through heads, kickass Japanese music, posing beyond
belief, mucho one liners, superior fight choreography, and enough
asskickings to fill my backyard. The precise ingredients for Japanese
zombie mayhem!
The gore is awesome. Much blood and guts. You can always tell
when a person gets cashed in, because he spits out a mouthful
of fake blood. This might seem childish by some standards, but
it’s right up my alley. Violence is also at a premium. Many
bullets, blades, and superhuman strength guarantee that. Not a
lick of nudity however. You hardly notice. The main female is
strangely attractive however.
Acting is not bad. There are some really over the top characters.
There is one that would ordinarily annoy the shit out of me, but
I somehow looked over his shenanigans. There are many many one
liners and posedowns. Every scene has some kind of overdramatic
pose.
The camerwork is where this movie really shines. Lots of rotating
camera angles and still shots. It looks like they really thought
this through. The flashbacks give me chills from their authenticity.
I'm such a drama queen!
The music is superb and evokes the proper emotions at the precise
time. The storyline is solid, though it is a bit quirky. For example,
you have a whole little side story of a couple bounty hunters
that doesn’t really amount to much. The overall concept
of resurrection is done to perfection, if not entirely original.
There are also some legitimately funny parts in this movie.
Overall, this movie is solid as fuck. If you are not into martial
arts, or cheesy one liners, you might not like it. If you are,
then you are in for a treat. The zombies in this movie are kind
of a by-product of the inherent violent nature of the film, and
are not really the focus. If you kill 30 people in a Forest of
Resurrection, you are going to get some fucking zombies.
Anyway, this movie gets Paynecraft's Seal of Asskicking Approval.
I give it 9.5 out of 10 mouthfuls of fake blood.
This movie was fueled by room temperature Guinness and early 80's
Judas Priest. It gets no better my friends.

If
you're looking for a movie with style, Versus is it.
Kill Bill without the babes but ten times the gore, and
zombies. I loved it.
The martial arts are excellant, I'm not usually a fan of
action, but this flick had a story and zombies, two things usually
missing from American action flicks. The story is a little complicated
at times, and the ending takes a little thought, but it's
very rewarding to watch. The overdrama Paynecraft mentions is
one of the best parts of the flick, that guy was fucking wacky
and somehow made it creepy as hell.
I do recommend watching in the original Japanese with the subtitles,
the Japanese actors were much better. The cheesy lines were delivered
badly by the english voices, and in the original Japanese you
can hear sarcasm. I do think all the cheesiness was intentional,
and both clever and amusing.
There were actually several amusing parts of this flick, when
the "runt" is getting smacked by this one badass chick
and he keeps trying to talk, it had me rolling.
A very impressive flick, this isn't run of the mill at all.
At one point there's a huge karate fight and the soundtrack
(which was perfect throughout) is just drums. The sounds of the
punching and grunting joined right into the music, very cool.
Ultra-gory, mostly in the form of gaping bullet holes entirely
through bodies, which we peek through. At one point a guy punches
his fist entirely through a head, then drops the eyeballs he grabbed
on the way through. Not only gory, but really fun gore. The blood
spitting, while simple enough, was very effective.
8.5 out of 10 crawling, tongue-wagging psychopaths

Versus
was a trip outside of the films I'm used to seeing, but it
was a great trip. I'm not much for foriegn films, but Versus
is something different. It wasn't an "Oh My God!"
or make you jump type of film. It was more of a pleasure to watch.
Everyone knows I pretty much hate action/horror films. But the
Kung-fu/Swordplay and even the super human strengths did not bother
me. It just flowed so well with the style of the film I didn't
even care, going with the story you'd expect it. Unlike some
American films were it just seems entirely out of place. Here
the camera shots and movements just made it three times cooler.
The zombies weren't a huge factor, more of obstacles in front
of the actual story. Not your average zombies either, but it still
stuck with me. It's hard not to notice some of the cheesiness,
but for the most part I enjoyed some of it. Actually I enjoyed
the final sword battle more than any of the Matrix films. The
ending was a little new, but thats what I liked about it.
Definetly not for everyones taste, but I'm willing to watch
it a second time.

A
while back Paynecraft lent me this movie. I wanted to watch it
but I wasn’t killing myself to get to it either. Last night while
flipping through channels I hit the beginning on Showtime. I wasn’t
going to watch it (hello? I had it sitting here for weeks), even
my husband was like, “Uh didn’t Payne lend you this movie forever
ago?” (Translation: You dumbass you’re going to watch this on
Showtime when you’ve had the DVD forever?) I just thought I would
see the beginning to get a feel for it. Well I couldn’t stop watching.
This movie is one of the Best Movies Ever! I can’t believe all
this time I could have been watching it over and over! Major ass
kickings, awesome soundtrack, incredible choreography, enough
gore to satisfy a room full of Horrorwatchers, and super hot Asian
guys all come together to make one of the best kickass martial
arts/zombie movies ever. Hell I’ll say it; this is the best kickass
martial arts/zombie movie ever!
9 out of 10 movies that would have been 5 out of 5 if they didn’t
have the girl getting hit all the time.

Versus...
there's so much to say about this film. Not in the deep,
profound, American Beauty sort of way - but a lot to say
nonetheless.
I had this sitting around my house for over a month much like
BQ. I popped it in one night and it blew my mind. This is the
sort of movie that doesn't really have a classification.
It's artsy in some ways, comedic in others, lots of kung
fu is going on, and of course - who could forget the zombies.
I really wouldn't even place this under "horror",
but it IS choc-full of violence, maiming, dismemberments, the
whole "9".
As fantasy as it is, it's very well choreographed and the
characters are just about all loveable - and the ones that are
not are still a comedic trip. It seems to me in this movie they
tried to make many of the characters "cool". I'm
completely down with that - they pulled it off well.
This film had it all. The characters were wild, the women were
beautiful, and the plot takes sci-fi/horror to another plane of
existence altogether. The ending was very different, but it fit
the movie perfectly. This is another must see - not just for horror
fans - but for damn near everyone. Versus rocked.
8 out of 10 times I saw cool poses that I, for one, would never
do in the midst of combat.
