What
do you get when you combine attractive college students and a
murderous fiend inspired by some of today's most notorious
urban legends? No, it's not a meeting of the Young Republicans
on your local campus. It's an unscary horror film cleverly
named Urban Legend.
This film came out in the same time period that brought us the
likes of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Obviously,
the powers that be thought that what we needed was another film
filled with stars from popular teen shows because the first couple
were cash cows. I personally felt as though that decision led
to some of the worst acting of these teen screamer movies.
Along with the zero scare factor and the subpar acting I felt
like the film's biggest deficiency was that it was very cliche.
Within the first viewing of each character I could have told you
who was going to live and who would die. And then I knew when
those same people were left alone, it was curtains for them.
There were some elements to the film that helped me feel as though
the hour and twenty minutes or so that I took to view it was not
all wasted. Primarily, I enjoyed the idea of a killer who used
urban legends to kill. I thought it was a good twist but then
it was taken too far. Too many of these tales were used, some
of which I've never heard of before. I was waiting for the
killer to start putting razor blades in fruit around campus. I
would also like to commend the casting director for putting together
such a delectable group of young ladies on the screen. That Alicia
Witt is the bee's knees.
Overall, I would find it really difficult to recommend this film
to anyone but there are those who like these teen scream movies.
If your among that group then by all means see this film. But
if you like your horror with some real scares in it, you might
have to look elsewhere. Except the back seat, don't look
in the back seat!
5 out of 10 classes I wish they would have offered at my school.
