WANTED: Two thrill-seeking reporters, brains optional, looking to dig up the story of the century. For information call...

Two tabloid reporters are sent to Transylvania to investigate the reappearance of Frankenstein's Monster or find new employment. While there they also encounter a sensitive Wolf Man, a nymphomaniac Vampiress, and a host of other horror staples with a twist.

This movie is straight comedy and the "horror" accentuates that. I look at this as an homage to Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein. While Ed Begley Jr and Jeff Goldblum are no replacement for Abbot and Costello, Goldblum makes for a great straight man to Begley's funny man.

Personally, I love this movie, I remember seeing it in the theater in 1985 and it quickly became one of my favorite comedies. With people like Teresa Ganzel, Michael Richards, John Byner, and Carol Kane, the comedy is done very well. In fact, this movie has Michael Richards' best character to date, and the cast works very well together. We also get to see a VERY sexy Geena Davis as the vampiress Odette.

I also like Joseph Bologna as the part-time mad scientist. While this movie was not very successful in theaters, it seems to have developed a pretty good following on DVD. You can find this bundled with Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Both movies pretty much have the same tone, but honor old school horror.

To give you an idea of the kind of humor in this, the writer/director, Rudy De Luca, also wrote for Mel Brooks and Carol Burnett. Watching this might have you laughing "until the cows go home!"

I didn't like this movie in theaters and I don't like it now. I walked out halfway through this poor excuse for a comedy when it was originally released. Years later it was on cable and I managed to make it all the way through a viewing. I should have gone with my initial instincts.

I dig the premise, but the execution falls completely flat. You can hear the jokes landing with a thud all over the place. Goldblum and Begley are amiable enough and try their hardest, but once they embark upon their trip, the film sputters and dies.

One highlight though was Norman Fell (You read that correctly. Mr. Roper shows up) as the editor of the tabloid the two men work for. I did get a kick out of the scene near the beginning of the film where he was standing in his office, pointing at copies of the paper and acknowledging that they are total crap.

For that one scene - a decent laugh in a movie that was sorely lacking more of them - I'll give Transylvania 6-5000:
One out of ten end credit songs that made want to hurl a brick through the television screen when I caught this movie on cable.
