Slaughterhouse of the Rising Sun
HUMANS
Reviewed by BQueen
Sometimes people are more interesting when they're dead.

“In the summer of 1972, Slaughterhouse of the Rising Sun was about to premiere to an eagerly awaiting world. However, the dreams of a generation were shattered when Director Vin Crease murdered the film’s Executive Producer and the only existing reels were lost.”

That paragraph and more of the same is what you get on the back of the box, with only a brief mention about the actual movie plot. It’s a shame really since the movie itself is pretty good. I wish they had taken all the effort they put into the fake back-story involving murder and missing reels and put it into the actual movie, which was good but could have been better fleshed out. After all there is nothing wrong with setting a film in a different decade, you don’t need a reason. In case I haven’t made myself clear, this movie’s gimmick is that it was made in 1972 and lost when the reality is it was made in 2004 and no one was killed in bringing it to us.

Basically the movie is about a mentally unstable porn star named Jennifer who joins up with a group of psychopathic hippies, and the fallout that ensues.

The movie does a great send up of the 70’s. The clothes, film style, music and mannerisms were great and very tongue in cheek at times. The film was manipulated to look like gritty seventies film but not over the top full of scratches and popping, just aged well. The drama and flashbacks in Jennifer’s head were very well done, both visually and audibly. The only weakness I saw in the premise was the lead actress who played Jennifer. She was too modern looking both in looks and dress.

The acting was fairly strong, especially from the two most crazy hippie girls. There were parts where the acting was truly awful but I think this was on purpose. While I don’t think this movie was an out and out spoof I do think it was meant to be a satire of 70’s films and in that respect I thought it succeeded admirably.

For a story taking place in the 70’s there was a surprising lack of gore and nudity. Heck the second scene in the movie was a porn shoot and both actors were fully clothed. The 70’s were all about the gratuitous, more boobs and blood please!

All in all I recommend this film. Ignore the gimmick (well unless you really like gimmicks) and take it for what it is; a satirical look at 70’s films that’s a lot of fun to watch.

6 out of 10 newly disfigured midget porn stars.
