Signs
ALIENS

It's not like they didn't warn us.

Graham Hess is a farmer/former preacher who has lost his faith after losing his wife in a horrible car accident. Graham is now raising his two children, Morgan and Bo, by himself. Helping him out and causing him trouble is his younger brother Merill. It is not until bizarre patterns begin appearing in his crop fields that Graham soon begins to question his faith again. The crop patterns are appearing world wide and are leading up to alien invasion. As the days pass until the aliens arrive Graham and his family decide to wait out the event in their family home and to make their stand together.

Very creepy and full of suspense. Mel Gibson leads the film as the father/hero Graham. But it is Joaquin Phonix that steals the movie as the off beat Merrill, some of his dialog and scenes with the children in their anti-alien outfits are priceless.

Although the movie tends to shy away from the direct violence in the picture, you hear almost everything that is happening, which only makes your heart beat that much faster. The scene where the family sees the alien reaching under the door sent chills clear down my spine and the climax in the basement is fantastic.

The aliens themselves look pretty nasty for what we get to see of them. Long, lanky and hungry are the words to describe them best.

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, this is his second best film so far in my opinion. Although the ending does not pack a big of punch as the Sixth Sense or Unbreakable, Signs is a very solid creepfest.

M. Night Shyamalan continues to "set the bar" for the horror/suspense genre with Signs. It's another example of a great storyteller giving us a good and totally complete story.

I was fascinated by the double meaning of the title of the film. The first and most obvious meaning was that of an impending alien invasion. The crop circles, irritable animals, and the baby monitor all led us to believe they were coming.

The second meaning dealt with the argument between those who believe that events happen merely by coincidence and those who believe that everything happens for a reason. The tragedy that befalls the Hess family, the last conversation between Graham and his wife, and the glasses of water left around the house are all "signs" of what Shyamalan believes is the answer to this argument.

See it if you haven't, own it if you have.

One of the best films I've ever seen. From start to finish the build up of horror and suspense is fantastic. I remember sitting in the theatre and having this uncomfortable feeling that I just could not shake. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The casting was flawless. Everyone played their parts to perfection. Mel Gibson seemed to have been made for this role as a father and reverend who has lost his faith. Joaquin Phoenix plays one of the most likable characters you'll ever see.

The film gives a great commentary on life and religion. I'll never forget the climax of the family fleeing to the basement when the aliens arrive, very intense stuff. This is a great horror film in the same vein as Jaws. Its not what you see on screen it's what the movie makes you see in your mind.

I would definitely put this in my all time top 10 list. This is the kind of movie that will never be as great as the first time you see it. The not knowing and the tension build up is what this film thrives on. The Sixth Sense is the M. Knight movie that gets all the hype, don't be fooled by it, Signs is the superior film. A review can't descriptively do this film proper justice. It must be seen.
