Severance
SLASHERS
Reviewed by GiveMeGore
Another bloody office outing.

Seven employees of a weapons manufacturer are going on a remote cabin when their route gets detoured by a large tree that has fallen, blocking the road. They are forced to continue on foot as their bus driver flat out refuses to take the detour. When they finally arrive at their destination, the employees are less then impressed with their lodging. That ends up being the least of their concerns as things go from strange to down right horrific.

A dark comedy at heart, Severance can be down right brutal at times. Horror comedies can often be hit or miss. It truly takes great writing and good acting to pull off a solid horror-comedy. And that’s exactly what the makers of this film pulled off. I was thoroughly entertained in every way imaginable while watching this flick.

What I found to be extremely impressive was the variety of different scares and styles of horror this film incorporated. We get top notch gore that was beautifully shot. We get home video style footage of soldiers in the jungle brutally murdering people in a village. We get a flash back of a horror film from the silent movie era. We get a scene straight out of Arachnophobia. We’re also treated to some grade A action flick type of suspense. Fuck, there’s even a funny mushroom trip scene. Mix all of that with intelligent wit and hilarious interactions between the co-workers and you got yourself one hell of a movie.

While staying at the run down lodge, the crew never really knows who is hunting them. When we finally find out what the fucks been going on, it really is a surprise. You can hate it or love it, but if you say you saw it coming, you’re full of malarkey!

I’ve been trying to compare Severance to the other great horror-comedies and it’s tough to do. Severance is definitely the most hardcore of them all on the horror side of things. There’s one scene that involves a bear trap that is incredible. Sure to please any gore hound.

The isolation of the team is one of the reasons this movie worked so well. You really felt they were all alone to fend for themselves in an impossible situation. Leg gets chopped off and the only medicine available is ecstasy. Well, I guess it could be worse if you think about it.

I’ve watched this flick a couple of times now and I honestly cannot find one legitimate gripe or negative thing to say about Severance. Definitely one of the most entertaining and surprising gems I’ve stumbled across in a long time. I really can’t recommend it enough.

9 out of 10 Best Horror-Comedy of all time.
