The Serpent and the Rainbow
Don't bury me... I'm not dead!
Reviewed by SirWiggle

Dennis Allen is a Harvard anthropologist who travels the globe looking for new alternative medicines. When a pharmaceutical company hears about a dead man walking the streets of Haiti they hire Dr. Allen to find out what makes the dead walk again. What awaits our hero in Haiti is a struggle of good vs. evil, rich vs. poor, and science vs. Voodoo.

Horror films that try to associate a scientific explanation for what is happening during the course of a film usually do not work. Most horror films are fantasy and they work based on the belief that anything can, and usually does, happen. This film worked for me because it took the scientific aspect and made it believable. And after that, I was able to accept just about anything the filmmakers threw at me.

Although there is little blood or gore to speak of, there are several sequences that are genuinely creepy. One scene in particular will have the male "members" of the audience squirming in their seats. I also thought the casting was great. Especially for the role of the chief of the secret police. He made the creepy parts just a little bit creepier.

Wes Craven tends to take a beating on this site. Whether you like the man's work or not, he has been the catalyst for some of the genre's most well known and successful films. It's a shame that this one gets lost in the mix of his other movies because I feel as though it's one of his stronger efforts.

Recommended.
