When
a bright flash of light appears over a sleepy little farming community,
all those that saw the blinding strobe head out to investigate.
After attracting the local media the community draws the watchful
eye of the government after the stories coming out of the town
begin to change from their initial reports. Now three agents will
find themselves in a midst of an alien invasion and will find
out that they have no one to turn to, not even themselves. Using
humans as host bodies, the aliens are using us as their puppets
and them being our masters. (Yeah I know it's lame but I LOVE
working the title of a movie into my review.)
This
is one of those rare movies that I can literally sit back and
enjoy every time it's on. A great cast, plot and effects make
this one a top notch alien thriller.
The
cast stars Donald Sutherland as Andrew Nivens, the crotchety old
man who knows more than anyone about aliens. Sutherland is made
for these roles, the guy just has a smug smart-assness about him
that makes him great for scientist or military roles. Eric Thal
plays Sam, Andrew's son and his second in command. Rounding out
the cast and adding a touch of simple beauty is Julie Warner,
who plays Mary Sefton, Sam's partner. I think Julie Warner is
an absolute goddess, just plain and beautiful, what a babe. Sam
and Mary are kind of a Mulder and Scully as the wear their FBI
suits and track down the alien invaders.
The
aliens resemble small stingrays with long whip like appendages.
They attach themselves to the back of a host and then form a collective
mind. This is great as it keeps you guessing who may or may not
be an alien puppet.
There
is also some very clever little bits thrown into this film. After
the aliens land, local boys dress the ship up and charge people
to go into their little fake alien craft. Admission is three bucks,
but you do get to take something home with you.
As
I said I really like this movie, it just plays well and lets the
old noggin drift away. Even an appearance by Richard Belzer didn't
ruin this one for me. Enjoy.
