Neville seems to be the last man on earth, but as he begins to
explore New York City he catches glimpses of what he thinks are
other humans. All too soon Neville learns that most of the humans
that survived the war have been turned into hideous mutants, who
can only come out at night. Lead by Mattheas, the mutants are
out to destroy everything and everybody associated with the world
before the war. With sunlight as his guardian Neville locks himself
in a penthouse and begins to work on a cure. Researching through
out the day and fending off mutants at night, Neville has become
the Omega Man.
Charleton Heston stars as Neville the burly-chested savior of
mankind. Heston does a good job and is a much larger man than
I ever thought. Anthony Zerbe plays the pasty and scabby Mattheas
leader of the mutants, fairly creepy in all aspects, most of the
mutants look like albinos with large sores. Also adding a little
love interest to the cast is a character by the name of Lisa.
Lisa is a young black woman who Neville meets and takes in, but
can she be trusted? And with the size of her afro in this movie,
she could hide a lot of secrets.
The movie centers around the isolation of Neville, which is good
at first but becomes great when the mutants hit the scene. One
man against an army that attacks every night, great stuff. Much
like the Thing and Aliens, the isolation factor just adds so much
to the movie. Also the fact that Neville has free reign over the
city at day, sets up a lot of good scavenging scenes.
Although the ending kinda wimps out the story of the Omega Man
is pretty good and the movie is definitely entertaining, although
at time a little long. With a rumor of a soon to be remake in
the works, check out the original so you can see how it all got
started.
