When
Jim Cole, a retired marshal, hangs up his tin star, he decides
that it is time for his family to enjoy a good and simple life.
Packing up the wagon and heading out west, Jim, his wife and the
young'ens hope to have all of their wishes fulfilled at their
new home and ranch. Things go bad from the start for Jim as the
local filthy rich cattle baron Jed Curry takes an immediate dislike
to our former law enforcer, but things get even more hairier before
long. You see, lurking up in the high country is a massive grizzly
bear known as "Satan", who decides to come down from
the hills to make matters rough on everyone. Caught between evil
men and a killer bear, Jim will have to once again strap on his
six shooters and bring justice to the land.
I
may have been duped into renting this flick, but it turned out
to be a fairly entertaining film, although it is more like a Disney/western/horror
film with some attitude and maulings.
For
the western aspect ya got the former marshal, the corrupt rich
man, and a sleazy bounty hunter who joins the fray about halfway
through. For the Disney/family vibe, ya got old Jim who is trying
to do right by his young wife and son, whom he has grown apart
from, add to this the fact that Jim needs $750 to save the family
farm and you got a real tear jerker. And for horror? Well what
more do you need than a big old slobbering man-eatin' grizzly
bear. Blood, you say? Well your not going to find it here, although
a few cows do get tore up, off-screen of course.
The
film builds slowly but the ending was actually quite good and
in a way very familiar. Oh, throw in a shark and some water and
you will see what I mean. I'm not saying Jaws
was a rip off of The Night of the Grizzly, but the ending
may have really influenced Peter Benchley's book, maybe.
