Night of the Demons
Angela's having a party, Jason and Freddy are too scared to come, but you'll have a hell of a time.
Reviewed by WL Paynecraft

Night of the Demons is about a bunch of sex starved teenagers in the 80’s who have a Halloween party at an old abandoned funeral parlor, aka Hull House. Once inside they conduct a séance and release an evil spirit trapped in the basement. Once the spirit starts possessing people, all shit breaks loose. There is more involved then this, including an underground river and a mass murder, but this is all we need to get going for now.

Some people think that this movie is shit. I for one strongly disagree. Sure the acting is terrible at times. At one point a girl gets possessed. What does the preternatural demon residing in her sound like? Well, it sounds just like the girl, except she talks louder and doesn’t have any voice inflections. Can you imagine what The Exorcist would be like if, when possessed, Linda Blair just started talking like a robot? Anyway, that’s not really fair. For the most part, the demons in all the Night of the Demons (Nights of the Demon?) trilogy have killer demonic voices.

Some of the dialogue is questionable. I’m not necessarily a bra burning feminist, but I got tired of Stooge calling this one girl a bitch all the time. Man the 80’s were strange weren’t they? This kind of political incorrectness happened all the time back then (have you seen Porky’s lately?). You also have the obligatory guy who knows all about Hull House and its history. You know the guy: “Rumor has it…..”.

Ok, that’s all I got. Now the good stuff.

This movie is quite spooky in some parts. Angela floating across the floor still gives me chills. She really is an underrated villain/mass murderess. Like all the NotD, the humor is effective and dark. There is one point where a guy was killed and he has a tombstone that says where his date of death should be “Died tonight”. Okay, maybe I’m the only one that thought that was funny. Still.

You can’t say “80’s teenager horror flick” without talking about girls getting naked. Most of the girls end up in the buff in one form or another. There is also a disturbing scene where the immortal Linnea Quigley plays a game of “Hide the tube of lipstick”, and I bet you’ll never guess where she hides it! That tube of lipstick also makes a cameo in Night of the Demons 2. Such continuity! You’ve also got a pretty sweet demonic lesbian kiss that had to have been quite risque back then. You see this kind of shit all the time nowadays. There are also a couple cool demonic erotic-dancing montages.

There is also great gore that you would expect from a movie such as this. Ahhh, sweet violence!

What else can I say? A great movie. If you can get over the 80’s boof hair on the girls, the luke warm acting, and the cheese dialogue, you’re in for a treat. They just released it on dvd, so more than me and BQueen must think it rocks. Go get it! I give it 8 out of 10 razor blade pies, just like Grandma used to make. Served up hot!

Yeah I picked this up the day it was released, it's one of my favorite movies of all time. The 80's were packed with horror movies but this one stands above the majority of them. The location they filmed in was creepy as hell and the music was of a higher caliber than most 80's flicks. There are two famous scenes that raise this movie even higher above the chum. One is the lipstick scene Payne mentioned and the other is Angela's dance. The dance scene should have been cheesy but somehow managed to be unsettling. Also Angela has a pretty sweet ass.

I have two major beefs with this movie. The first one is how the demons are where they need to be without regard to time. For instance, someone can be running from a demon and go around a corner and have a conversation with someone else. Then when the conversation is over the demon will show up on cue even though it was about six feet from the person it was chasing. The second one involves who survives but I can't go into that without revealing the ending so I'll just say that some people were more deserving than others.

I haven't listened to the commentary yet but Linnea Quigley's interview is pretty interesting. Of course I love her so I'm biased.

I give this movie 9 out of 10 heads of mall hair.

Man this is a classic example of late 80’s cheeseball, video store horror! I’m not a huge fan of the Night of the Demons series but I do feel this one is the best of the batch.

A bunch of teens in an old funeral home with drugs, alcohol and rampant libidos, you can almost close your eyes and already see what’s coming! But if you did that you would miss a great full on full frontal shot of the lovely Linnea Quigley’s nether regions, MMMM nether regions. Besides the lovely shot of Linnea’s wool factory, we also get a ten second glimpse of her panty clad bottom as she searches the candy isle for something to suck on, and is it me or perhaps next to Nina Hartley does Linnea have the second best ass of the 80’s?

Anyway, there are a few demons and a little gore in this one as well, but as you can tell I had my mind on other things during this flick, especially at the tender age of 14 when I first saw it.
