New York Ripper
EXPLOITATION

A worn out New York detective teams up with a college professor (Paolo Malco, House by the Cemetery) in order to catch a killer who likes to cut up women while talking and quacking like a duck. Yeah, you read that right.

I liked this movie although it was slow at times. The duck voice was just silly; it kept yanking me right out of the movie. The story and violence were so brutal though, it was probably a good thing. This one is sleazy folks.

The gore isn’t completely over the top like in Fulci’s straight horror movies but it was worse in its simplicity and realism. There isn’t anything supernaturally safe here, just several sharp objects being inserted in different women, and that’s pretty much a daily occurrence in real life.

The best kill scene of the bunch is the slicing up of the detective’s hooker friend with a razor blade. She’s the one chosen to receive Fulci’s eye assault, and I’ve got to say, I thought it was better than the one in Zombi. It was definitely more realistic.

The thing this movie really had was a lot of nudity and sex. A LOT. Live sex shows, masturbation, sexual assault with some skeezy guy’s sweaty toes (I’m still not over that scene *shudder*), put all that in your penis pipe and smoke it. No really, there was a penis pipe too. Add cut up women and hundreds of naked pin up pictures and it’s no wonder this one made it to the Video Nasties list. All prints were infamously escorted to the airport and ordered to leave the UK by the chief censor at the time.

If you’re a fan of Fulci or Italian horror/giallo then you must see this movie. For a movie that was only 91 minutes it really did seem to drag on and on at times but that’s my only complaint. Sure lots of things didn’t make sense and the killer’s motivation when revealed was a total WTF? But hey, that’s to be expected.

I feel like I really have to put a warning in here. If you’re a casual horror fan I don’t think you should watch this movie. It’s pretty damn brutal. If you don’t like movies that could be labeled misogynistic then run away as fast as you can.

7 out of 10 times I wished I could ask Fulci about his duck thing.

Here are the movie titles on the marquis during the scenes on 42nd street, the ones I could make out anyway:
Revenge of the Bushido Blade
Final Exam
Slavers
Kung Fu’s Hero
The Master Killer
60 Second Assassin
Slaughter in San Francisco
The Unseen

I watched this movie on account of my sister. She's a Serial Killer fangirl, and she rented this one night. It's been around 10 years since I saw this, but I have to agree with Queen that this movie is shockingly brutal. There are some scenes where when you see them, you think to yourself "that's just not right."

The duck voice is kind of silly, and Fulci's motivation for that may never be known, but it does detract from the movie a little. Maybe that's what it was supposed to do.

This is the kind of movie that leaves a dirty feeling with you. I don't remember the eye assault, but I do remember the hooker cut up with the razor blade. It was unlike anything I had ever seen, and I wasn't too sure what I was watching at that point. This was my first Fulci experience and I wasn't too sure to think of it at the time. Now that I'm older, I appreciate it for what it is. I'm also fiending to see it again.

I'm giving this an 8 out of 10 Donald Duck impressions.
