The Maid
HAUNTINGS

Rosa, a young girl from the Philippines, moves to Singapore to be a maid. You can deduct from the clever title that Rosa is our central character. The Chinese believe that on the seventh month of the lunar calendar the gates of hell open and the dead walk the earth for thirty days. Rosa picked a shitty time to move to Singapore. She also makes the poor decision to sweep a pile of ashes from in front of the house. It was an offering to the dead, and now… you know, bad stuff.

I would give you more plot, but really, the plot sucks. I pride myself in not guessing movie endings before they happen. I don’t try to figure out what’s going on because I like being surprised at the end. I can’t say it worked this time. I knew what was coming long before it happened, and I wasn’t very impressed when it did. The plot is extremely weak, I just didn’t care what was happening. That’s probably why this film hasn’t gotten positive reviews.

But, I kinda liked it. The imagery is great. The acting, especially for horror, is quite decent. And, I don’t know, maybe it was just my mood, but I got scared. It wasn’t that fulfilling, hard to shake, creeped out kind of scared, but it was still satisfying. The Asian horror techniques have become almost cliché, and they’re all over the place here. But that doesn’t mean they don’t work. Barring A Tale of Two Sisters, I’ve been pretty disappointed with the most recent Asian horror, but I’d put this one higher up on the list.

Note: A lot of the movie is in English, but it can be hard to understand, so I recommend watching with subtitles throughout. Unless you’re one of those people that hate reading, then disregard.

I didn't think the movie was that horrible. I myself always ruin movies by guessing the ending, and having the "I knew that was going to happen" attitude... With this movie, I let myself go and reminded myself to shutup, so maybe that is why it was so good(because I wouldn't allow myself to guess).

It was not overly cliche, except for the fact that it was an asian haunt film haha. I was worried it was going to be another "Asian woman with long black hair covering face" kinda movie because of the first fright scene, but thankfully there was a bit more to the feel.

The only major mark down this movie got was what I seem to come across with a bit of Italian movies, the switch from English to a foreign language.. The movie goes from subtitles to broken english(as you are correct, the english from the mother is horrible!)

So besides a few obvious turns, I think this movie is worth a viewing
