After
her divorce, Lucy Emerson and her two sons Michael and Sam move
from Phoenix to Santa Carla California, to live with her father
in order to get a new start on life. Once on the sunny beaches
and boardwalks of Santa Carla, the boys learn that things change
when the sun fades on the California coast. After falling for
a mysterious girl named Star, Michael soon becomes involved with
a very different group of friends. New and alone, Michael has
just been found by the Lost Boys.
Considered by many to be the quintessential vampire film of the
80's (sorry that honor belongs to Fright Night) The
Lost Boys are basically the boy band of the vampire world.
Directed by Joel Schumacher, this is a ninety minute music video
full of 80's new wave clothes and the cream of the teen heartthrobs
of the time.
Keifer Sutherland leads the boys as the devilish David, a blonde-mullet-wearing,
leather-clad vampire. Filling out his clan are Paul, Dwayne, the
young Laddie and Marko. Marko may look familiar to some, his real
name is Alex Winter, but most will know him as Bill S. Preston
Esq, that’s right, kiddies the Bill of Bill and Ted fame. The
Emerson clan is played by Dianne Wiest, Jason Patric (Michael)
and Corey Haim (Sam). To round out the cast we also get Corey
Feldman as one half of the vampire hunting Frog brothers, who
supply some good one liners through out the film, the best being
"It's the attack of Eddie Munster!".
Most of the movie deals with Michael and his dealings with his
new abilities, which provide some amusement with his brother and
the Frog brothers. There is very little gore and the vamps don't
really pop out the fangs until the end of the film. There are
also major liberties taken with the vampire mythos in this one
dealing with how a vampire is created and the powers they have,
my least favorite was the flying, but that’s me. The Lost Boys
also sports one of the lamest master vampires of all time, and
Jamie Gertz, who plays Star, doesn't even show a nipple.
I've always felt the Lost Boys was overrated and never as
good as most people thought, but it does have a lot of style.
The soundtrack is also pretty good with a lot of covers of older
songs, but the best is the song "Cry Little Sister"
that plays through out the entire film, the creepy chorus of "Thou
shall not fall" adds a much needed eeriness to this lackluster
vampire flick.

Yeah, throw in Vamp along with this flick and Fright
Night and you have three of the more popular vampire movies
from the 80's. I remember really liking this movie as a kid,
but I doubt I could really appreciate it now, except for nostalgia's
sake.
Cry Little Sister was a great song. Sisters of Mercy
have some other pretty cool songs. Bury Me Deep is fucking
awesome. Many consider them to be the founding members of the
Goth band revolution. Anyway, a decent flick. I gotta give it
5.5 out of 10 Corey's. Ahhh. You seen that coming didn't
you?
Edited to add: 7/19/05--Ok, I'm eating a shit sandwich on
this one. We just watched this movie again over the weekend. It
was awesome and totally stood the test of time, cheesy music,
clothes, and hairstyles withstanding. I was never bored, and the
humor was still relevant for the most part. The Frog Brothers
were classic. I re-give this 8 out of 10 muscular shirtless saxophone
players.
