SLASHERS
Reviewed by The Horrorist

A group of pretty, young people head off into the woods for some camping and partying, once there a masked killer starts offing them one by one. Imagine how much time we could all save if for slashers we just said "slasher" as the plot description and let people just assume it would be a masked killer chasing young people around a forest. Anyways, that's neither here nor there, is it?

Killer Campout is a no-budget slasher flick that was shot in nine days and then sent to me for reviewing. Once here I promptly let it sit on the shelf for several months before popping it in. The moral to this story is: take your time, I'm gonna. Or maybe it's: you can't hurry love.

No, that doesn't even make any sense. But for what it was, it wasn't bad.

The flick starts with a couple cute chicks making out, which is a damn fine way to start a slasher. The ensuing kill, however, lowered my expectations considerably. Just not well done. This is how the kills go throughout the movie, very hit or miss. Some suck so much I couldn't think of a way to make them look less real, and then a couple were really quite impressive. I think it's a good example of doing what you can do well, and avoiding that which is a little out of your reach, something I learned in my days as a guitar-playing legend. See, I'm only a legend because no one got to see me doing things I wasn't very good at.

The acting was really top-notch. I've seen many a low/no budget indie flick and the acting is almost always the most difficult part of the flick to tolerate, and that's not the case here at all. There were a few times when the performances weren't so good, but overall the acting in this one is roughly twice as good as you'll see in a film like this. The odd part was the visual acting was often overdone, much like you'll see in plays, everything a little exaggerated so the cheap seats can see it.

Another interesting changup is that instead of the death-metal I've come to expect and ignore in every indie, this one is all bluesy, with some metal sprinkled in. It was a nice change and seemed professionally done.

Clearly the filmmakers were fans of Clerks, there were several similar jokes and a couple of the girls were pretty much female Jay & Silent Bob. I liked 'em.

Unfortunately, the cast was cute and yet stayed clothed throughout, something that never ceases to disappoint in a slasher. Seriously folks, slashers all show some skin, it's a rule.

The part that annoyed me the most was the ungodly long chase scene at the end. I'm a low-stress person, suspense for more than a few minutes turns to boredom. And I know it's a beloved tradition, but the girl being chased shouldn't fall down more than twice. It just gets silly after that.

However, some editing could really help, but with a running time this short that's a new problem. There really should have been a flashback scene showing us more about the killer to round it out. Still, as far as no-budget flicks go, this one's better than most.

3 out of 10 girls who really should have lost the bikini
