When
Brian Kessler and his girlfriend Carrie plan a road trip across
country to photograph and document famous locations and murder
scenes of serial killers, they forget one thing, they are almost
broke. In desperation the two post an ad at the local college
looking for someone to share expenses on the trip from the east
coast to the west coast. The ad will be answered by Early Grayce
and his girlfriend Adele and they’re in for one hell of a trip.
This is the movie that made Brad Pitt less of a pretty boy and
truly one great actor as he delivers an excellent, disturbing
and forceful performance.
As Early, Pitt is a white trash unremorseful and unfeeling character
who does whatever is necessary to fulfill his needs and desires,
regardless of right and wrong.
Next to Fight Club and 12 Monkeys, this is Pitt's
best performance ever. Along with Pitt, Juliette Lewis plays the
dimwitted Adele Corners, Early's naive trailer-park princess,
as sexy as she is pitiful, Lewis captures the character of Adele
with uncanny precision. Rounding out the cast as Brian and Carrie
are David Duchovny and Carrie Laughlin. Duchovny is the perfect
wishy-washy WASP foil to Pitt's ignorant redneck.
Kalifornia is packed with violence, intensity and at times raw
sexuality that seems to jump off the screen. If you’re a fan of
Natural Born Killers, Cape
Fear, American Psycho or movies of that genre,
then Kalifornia will not disappoint you in any way. Driven
by Pitt's performance, Kalifornia is a full on road rage
assault, that will leave you asking "Adele, what kinda coo-coo
bird keeps a cactus in her purse?"
