Hostel: Part II
HUMANS
Reviewed by Lord J

In order to escape the everyday worries of the college party-girl life (not to mention all of those hectic Girls Gone Wild tapings), three young American women decide to get a little R&R by traveling to Europe for a bit of a vacation. While there, they meet some wonderfully creepy gents and one charismatic stranger, who invite the three of them to stay at a little hostel she knows of. Well… you know what happens next.

Hostel 2 seems to follow the 80’s slasher sequel formula of: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This sequel really doesn’t depart from the original too much. If you liked the first Hostel, you’ll probably like Hostel 2. If you didn’t like the original, then I’d pretty much skip this one as well.

Actually, they did add a little something for the sequel. You get to see a little behind-the-scenes action on how the victims are selected, as well as how the rich sickos, eager for their next big thrill, go about bidding on these unfortunate souls.

I did feel for the victims, one in particular, a little bit more this time around. Then again, it might just be because they were women and I generally have less sympathy for male victims in horror movies… I know, I’m such a chauvinist pig.

The gore/editing was rather strange, IMO. I mean, there were some scenes where you think the camera is going to turn away or just hint at what is happening instead of actually showing you… but nope, you get to see the whole thing. But then there are times when you just can’t help but get the feeling that something is being held back for the inevitable unrated director’s cut DVD.

There was a big-time WTF moment in horror movie history towards the beginning, and at least one more scene that could have used a bit more explanation. But neither scene had much to do with the plot, so take it for what it’s worth. There also seemed to be more filler in this movie. Now it isn’t horribly boring or completely unnecessary filler, but it probably isn’t what most people paid to see either.

Oh yeah... I almost forgot. That "Most shocking ending ever" in a horror movie promised by the trailer... maybe the most shocking ending I've seen this week, but only because this is the only movie I've seen this week.

Overall, this movie was moderately enjoyable, but not anything I’m going to rush out and buy on DVD the moment it comes out. I give Hostel II 6.5 out of 10 things that a dog just shouldn’t eat no matter how hungry it is.

After watching this for a second time, I gained more appreciation for what Eli Roth pulled off with his first attempt at a sequel. This my friends, is how a sequel SHOULD be done.

It's the same exact story as it's predecessor with the same exact people doing the same exact thing. Turn up the body count, turn up the gore and give us three very likeable and very relatable female characters and you got yourself a kick ass sequel.

Eli also decided to show us how global this underground cult is and how clients bid on each unsuspecting victim. It was a great angle to play. The acting, story, flow, gore, all great. Really don't have one gripe about this film.

8 out of 10 SEXY GOOD TIMES!

Ah, Hostel II...quite a sick one, that movie.

This movie repulsed me. It wasn't so much the gore. And there was some gore, let me tell you. All you gorehounds out there will be pleased. It was the torture that really bothered me. Now, I can enjoy watching Bimbo #3 get macheted real nice and quick-like, but when she's being sawed and sliced and drill and all of the above slowly and screaming in pain, I just can't watch it.

I did like the characters. The three protagonists were pretty likeable girls, and you actually felt for them. Our two wealthy "Bloodhounds" this time around were great as well.

I didn't understand some scenes, especially one weird scene involving a Bloodhound boss and the Bubblegum Gang. It comes out of nowhere and I just sat there thinking "Oooooo-kaaaaaay...why?" The final scene was also pretty silly.

It wasn't a completely awful watch, but I personally won't be anticipating Hostel 3. If you like the first one, then this one will be worth your time.

I give it 5 out of 10 twisted games of soccer.
