In
order to escape the everyday worries of the college party-girl
life (not to mention all of those hectic Girls Gone Wild
tapings), three young American women decide to get a little R&R
by traveling to Europe for a bit of a vacation. While there, they
meet some wonderfully creepy gents and one charismatic stranger,
who invite the three of them to stay at a little hostel she knows
of. Well
you know what happens next.
Hostel
2 seems to follow the 80s slasher sequel formula of:
if it aint broke, dont fix it. This sequel really
doesnt depart from the original too much. If you liked the
first Hostel, youll probably like Hostel 2.
If you didnt like the original, then Id pretty much
skip this one as well.
Actually,
they did add a little something for the sequel. You get to see
a little behind-the-scenes action on how the victims are selected,
as well as how the rich sickos, eager for their next big thrill,
go about bidding on these unfortunate souls.
I
did feel for the victims, one in particular, a little bit more
this time around. Then again, it might just be because they were
women and I generally have less sympathy for male victims in horror
movies
I know, Im such a chauvinist pig.
The
gore/editing was rather strange, IMO. I mean, there were some
scenes where you think the camera is going to turn away or just
hint at what is happening instead of actually showing you
but nope, you get to see the whole thing. But then there are times
when you just cant help but get the feeling that something
is being held back for the inevitable unrated directors
cut DVD.
There
was a big-time WTF moment in horror movie history towards the
beginning, and at least one more scene that could have used a
bit more explanation. But neither scene had much to do with the
plot, so take it for what its worth. There also seemed to
be more filler in this movie. Now it isnt horribly boring
or completely unnecessary filler, but it probably isnt what
most people paid to see either.
Oh
yeah... I almost forgot. That "Most shocking ending ever"
in a horror movie promised by the trailer... maybe the most shocking
ending I've seen this week, but only because this is the only
movie I've seen this week.
Overall,
this movie was moderately enjoyable, but not anything Im
going to rush out and buy on DVD the moment it comes out. I give
Hostel II 6.5 out of 10 things that a dog just shouldnt
eat no matter how hungry it is.
