Hell of the Living Dead
When the creeping dead devour the living flesh.
Reviewed by Misfortune

Hell of the Living Dead is a zombie movie that isn't good, but it's not awful either. It has some ok parts to it. The story starts at the Project Hope Center on an island off of New Guinea. There is a radioactive gas leak and soon the half of the place that breathed in the gas start eating the other half that didn't. The government soon sends in a S.W.A.T. team to the lab.

It's really hard to explain this movie, even after just watching it. The story is simple enough, but the elements involved make it hard to give an accurate review on whether this movie is below average or really bad.

The team is sent in, and they have to make their way to the opposite shore in order to reach the island. Along the way they rescue two journalists from the clutches of the zombies. They must make their way across a part of the country and too the island in order to figure out how to fix the problem. The zombies seem to be everywhere, and they have to fight constantly in order to survive.

This movie is really messed up. They've inserted stock footage of tribes and animals from New Guinea, and you can tell exactly where they made the cuts. Since this is an Italian movie, the dubbed in English doesn't always match the movement of their mouths. That and the overacting of some of the S.W.A.T. team members really annoys the hell out of me.

The gore is probably the hardest thing to make a call on. Sometimes, it looks fantastic, like they got a real pro such as Savini or Baker. Other times it looks like they just threw some paint and pig guts on people. You never know which you are going to get for any particular scene. There is some nudity, the female journalist had a stand-in for when she rips her top off. They are a real nice set though. There are other tit shots, but none anybody would enjoy. A set of dried up and saggy native boobs that made me want to vomit, they kept the camera on her for far too long.

Overall, the story is pretty cheesy, and so are half the effects. The bad acting and stock footage don't help either. While some gore is really well done, it doesn't make up for the rest of the crap in this film.

Yeah, I was a bit torn on this movie too. I felt like I was supposed to really like it, but I left it feeling a little undecided. The stock footage was horrible. I had to fast forward through all that shit. I should never have to fast forward through a movie. Rewind yes. Fast forward, no.

The gore was good at times and the gratuitous nudity was appreciated. There were some lapses from reality. One I vaguely remember is the girl straying into the dark abandoned building, and then actually not expecting a zombie to be in there. Plus, they have the obligatory "guy who is too confident killing zombies, and then gets nabbed". Gotta love those guys.

I feel like if they would have done a couple little things differently, that this would have been a winner. Instead it is a middle of the road zombiefest. I give it 4.5 out of 10 30 second scenes of birds flying around. Give me a fucking break!

I actually own this one on vhs under the title Night of the Zombies.

The gore is plentiful, but ranges from good to just plain cheesy, the acting sucks all around and there are endless shots of tribal societies in the deep jungle which seem to have been inserted into the film for the sole purpose of giving one of the on screen hotties a chance to jog through the underbrush topless.

I love this film. This is one of those movies i pop in when I want some mindless zombie gore from really untalented Italian filmmakers. The film exists to gross out the veiwer and show the woman jogging topless.

Adding to my glee over this atrocity is the fact that the filmmakers took the single most unique approach I've ever seen to scoring a film-instead of creating a new soundtrack, they simply borrowed the entire Goblin score from the 1979 Dawn of the Dead! Not a joke, folks, it's the very same score, just inserted at random here.

Terrible flick, but undoubtedly a great deal of fun to watch if one is in the right mood. Because it's such a true piece of bad cinema - ie it remains bad all the way through- I'm gonna give Night of the Zombies:
