Jonathan
Graves has just inherited his family's homestead. Raised
by a friend of the family after the death of his mother and father,
young Jonathan is about to inherit more than just a house, but
also his family's dark secrets. As Jonathan and his girlfriend
Rebecca look deeper into the old house, Jonathan falls deeper
and deeper into his family's dark past.
Brought to you by Luca Bercovici, the man who brought us The Granny,
this B horror flick lies somewhere between Gremlins and The Haunted
Mansion, is a slow and damn near retarded adventure into the occult.
The kills are bad and the effects are worse, but nothing beats
the appearance of Jonathan's two little helpers, Grizzel
and Greedigut, two truly wacked out Oompa-Loompas.
Jonathan is quite a fast learner as after finding an old book
and thumbing through the pages, he quickly learns how to summon
creatures and cast spells. Over the next few days he becomes obsessed
with the rites and rituals he unearths and even gains a set of
glowing eyes. Finding a passage to unleash a greater spirit, Jonathan
lures seven of his friends into a night at the house that they
will never forget.
There is no one in the cast worth mentioning and the film itself
is pretty awful, but somehow it managed to spawn three more sequels
over a decades time. The only thing Ghoulies has going for it
is a pretty neat little box and poster, that will even draw the
attention of the most novice horror fan.
