A cop on Mars is dispatched to the remote colony of Shining Canyon
to escort the most notorious criminal on Mars, James "Desolation"
Williams to a more secure jail. Once Ballard and her companions
arrive in Shining Canyon, however, they discover that it's a literal
ghost town. It seems that an archaeological team has uncovered
an ancient relic at a nearby dig site, unleashing the vengeful
spirits of the planet's ancient warrior inhabitants, which have
now possessed the bodies of the human invaders and set about trying
to destroy them.
A
little horror and a little scifi and not a bad way to spend an
hour and a half. Lots of violence and some suspenseful situations,
could have used a little skin to push it over the top.
If
you've ever seen Assault on Precinct 13 then you've already
seen this movie. Literally, I'm not exaggerating - it's the exact
same movie with new actors and instead of a street gang it's dead
aliens. Other than that it's literally a scene by scene remake.
These two movie have more in common than any remakes I can think
of, actually. It's bizarre that John Carpenter decided to rip
off his own movie. And to be honest I think I like Assault better.
Not
much here really, I enjoyed it but I also consider it a pretty
good sign that maybe Carpenter should retire. Actually, all his
movies since The Fog have been a sign of that. It's mindless,
grotesque fun - but if he's going to churn stuff like this out
he really should drop the "John Carpenter's..." from
the title. After John Carpenter's Vampires I realized that
it was more of a warning than an endorsement, anyway.
6
out of 10 cops I wanted to administer a cavity search to (completely
unacceptable, sorry!)
