Freddy vs Jason
Winner kills all.

I really enjoyed this picture based on the approach. Ronny Yu serves up an admirably gory tip of the hat to the two most recognizable 80's horror icons and nothing more.

Look, this film isn't high art. It was never meant to be taken for high art, and it will never be considered high art - and that doesn't matter one damned bit. Freddy Vs. Jason is exactly what it set out to be - a long-awaited love letter to all of us who kept going back for another helping of the escapades of these two maniacs throughout the 80's and into the 90's.

I have precisely the opposite point of view from the Horrorist on this one- I have always been a Fred Krueger fan, even though I'll be the first to admit some of those sequels were far too corny (of course, I can say the same for F13 as well. I mean, Jason in Manhattan? Please).

What really impressed me in this one was that Robert Englund picked up as if it HADN'T been ten years or so since he last portayed the scar faced slasher in a movie. Krueger is a more difficult character to maintain than most slasher icons since his presence involves dialogue and personality- actual acting is required to make him who he is. Englund really delivered, and he demonstrates in this picture that Freddy really has become a part of him.

I also enjoyed the inclusion of Pamela Voorhees, and though I lamented the absence of Kane Hodder (THE definitive Jason) I felt this incarnation of Crystal Lake's least popular denizen was sufficient. To be fair to Ken Kerzinger, he got the mannerisms down..and the kills were spectacular.

Good ending (far superior to the shitbox alternate ending they provided on the dvd. What? they didnt think Elm street 2 pissed enough people off as it was?) and terrific visuals. The acting and dialogue (save for Freddy, whose opening narration/tirade was a highlight for me)) were a bit soft, and the film really wasn't scary, but there's razzle dazzle in abundance this time out.

I heartliy advise horror fans in search of some good, blood-soaked fun to checkout Freddy vs. Jason.

Freddy vs Jason, the horror movie spectacle that brings together the leads from the A Nightmare on Elm St and the Friday the 13th series, is director Ronny Yu's ultimate blood, guts, and gore fright delight. The film is set both on Elm Street and at Camp Crystal Lake, with a group of scared and vulnerable teenagers the clear victims of the wrath supplied by Freddy and Jason.

I was surprised at how much I liked this movie, considering the crapfest their most recent sequels were. I've always been a fan of Jason, but Freddy Krueger lost me after just a couple movies. To me the idea of a boogeyman that lives in dreams just isn't scary, and the ridiculous ways he kills people (after the original) were very entertaining - but not scary. I've never been comfortable with the realm of horror-for-laughs, I'm a purist.

I gave this flick a high rating not just because it was done well, but it re-energized my interest in the other Friday the 13ths and A Nightmare on Elm Streets. I was pleased with the ending, and I'll go see the sequel when it comes out.

One thing, Jason's blood is black and Freddy's is green, but in FvJ it was all red. Maybe the filmmakers thought this would be more gruesome, and if that's the case, cool - if not then it's a good example of shoddy research.

8/10

This movie was well done and I commend Ronny Yu for trying to make both characters get back to the basics of what made them the icons they are today. And hello Monica Keena!! Wow!!

Now that being said this movie didn't scare me once. Not one jump or even one little flinch. Like I said Ronny Yu TRIED to make both characters get back to basics but he didn't. Why do we have to see Freddy's face or the bottom half of Jason's? Go back to the first Nightmare and see how Craven hid Freddy's face. Whether it was in shadows or just under the brim of his fedora, it was creepier when you just got a glimpse of his burnt mug. And Jason was much more horrific when you had to guess what is deformed face looked like. Unfortunately, Freddy had to crack wise again and ham it up. Enough with the comedy please!

Overall this movie was entertaining but far from anything I'd call scary. My dumb-ass will probably see the sequel when it drops.
