I
really enjoyed this picture based on the approach. Ronny Yu serves
up an admirably gory tip of the hat to the two most recognizable
80's horror icons and nothing more.
Look,
this film isn't high art. It was never meant to be taken for high
art, and it will never be considered high art - and that doesn't
matter one damned bit. Freddy Vs. Jason is exactly what
it set out to be - a long-awaited love letter to all of us who
kept going back for another helping of the escapades of these
two maniacs throughout the 80's and into the 90's.
I
have precisely the opposite point of view from the Horrorist
on this one- I have always been a Fred Krueger fan, even though
I'll be the first to admit some of those sequels were far too
corny (of course, I can say the same for F13 as well. I
mean, Jason in Manhattan? Please).
What
really impressed me in this one was that Robert Englund picked
up as if it HADN'T been ten years or so since he last portayed
the scar faced slasher in a movie. Krueger is a more difficult
character to maintain than most slasher icons since his presence
involves dialogue and personality- actual acting is required to
make him who he is. Englund really delivered, and he demonstrates
in this picture that Freddy really has become a part of him.
I
also enjoyed the inclusion of Pamela Voorhees, and though I lamented
the absence of Kane Hodder (THE definitive Jason) I felt this
incarnation of Crystal Lake's least popular denizen was sufficient.
To be fair to Ken Kerzinger, he got the mannerisms down..and the
kills were spectacular.
Good
ending (far superior to the shitbox alternate ending they provided
on the dvd. What? they didnt think Elm street 2 pissed enough
people off as it was?) and terrific visuals. The acting and dialogue
(save for Freddy, whose opening narration/tirade was a highlight
for me)) were a bit soft, and the film really wasn't scary, but
there's razzle dazzle in abundance this time out.
I
heartliy advise horror fans in search of some good, blood-soaked
fun to checkout Freddy vs. Jason.
