Two
Americans on a romantic camping trip in Ireland are murdered brutally.
Several days later, during the ancient festival of Samhain, a
group of American students move into a cottage that is surrounded
by a forest and lake. They are visiting to study the rituals of
the ancient Druids. Unknown to them, an incestuous cannibalistic
clan lives in the remains of an abandoned copper mine. Stalked
by a large, disfigured mutant, the students and chaperones must
fight for their lives.
The
beginning is really good and has lots of gore. We also get to
see Chaisey Lain naked. That's right. Most of the actresses in
this movie are porn stars. Sadly, the beginning is also the best
part. After the opening credits, everything goes downhill.
The
writers tried to show us how they were horror fans by referencing
movies. The horror references were: The Town that Dreaded Sundown,
Psycho, Slasher Flicks, Sam Raimi. They also try to use
a lot of jump scares. Ultimately, they fail. On of the kids has
watched a lot of horror movies and details horror movie plots
a la scream. There's also a video of a very cheap Halloween
clone that is watched.
There's
a local clairvoyant man knows everything about Samhain and about
the cannibals. His only role is really to tell people to "stay
on the path". I guess the path is magical and prevents the
cannibals from attacking anyone who is on it. We also get the
dickhead who keeps picking on the prudish girl.
There's
a scene where the chaperone is taking out the trash and she walks
forever. This made me ask, how far does one have to walk to take
out the trash? Why is this scene important? To be honest I don't
know. There is talk about the Sawney Bean Legend with really cheesy
effects. They explain that some people think that some members
of the clan migrated to Ireland, which fills a plot hole. While
explaining the legend of Sawney Bean, we are also told the history
of Samhain. I suppose if a horror movie isn't scary, it should
teach you something to compensate.
This
movie really takes a while to get going and we don't see anything
for most of the movie. It starts to pick up when there's twenty
minutes left, but it doesn't go anywhere. The cannibals don't
look too bad, but they resemble monsters more than humans, and
the gore is not too bad. It's just a shame that there's very little
of either throughout the whole movie.
Some
of the things that are really stupid are, one of girls has a map
and is reading it in the dark without a flashlight. I was a Boy
Scout for seven years and have been on many camping trips. If
it's dark and you try to read a map without a flashlight, you're
practicing an exercise in futility. It just doesn't happen! Also,
the local man sees a dead body and has to run home to vomit. Why
not just vomit right there? The funniest part is when the monster
sticks his hand up the local guy's ass and pulls out his intestines.
The
nudity is pretty good. As stated above Chasey Lain gets nude,
and we get some nudity from Jenna Jameson, which is always nice.
Also, we get some martial arts from Ginger Lynn Allen, who looks
like hell and uses a bad Irish accent.
The
ending has got to be the biggest WTF moment I've ever seen. Basically,
think of this as Wrong
Turn meets The Hills Have Eyes meets a pile of
shit.
