The
cast and crew of a low budget horror movie get together for a
wrap party at the home of the movies director. Unbeknownst to
them the movie, titled Summer of Blood, has just been rejected
by a Hollywood producer and the director of the film has gone
a wee bit insane because of it. By insane I mean she’s decided
that everyone must die.
Either you can handle low budget indies or you can’t. If you can’t
then don’t watch this movie. It has issues like bad audio (although
I have a screener copy so this could be improved with the upcoming
release from Brain Damage), poor editing, low budget effects (why
is the blood pink? Blood is the easiest and cheapest effect on
the planet, there’s no excuse for pink watery blood), and some
questionable talent.
Cutting Room does have some things in its favor. Yes it’s
cheap but at least these guys have gone out and made a movie and
managed to get it distributed. Lyla Sullivan is great as Angel,
the director who just wants her film to make it. She has great
delivery and also saves money at Harris Teeter by using her VIC
card. (Sorry I couldn’t resist, you have to see the movie to understand
what I’m talking about.) Ethan, the annoying loser guy, is actually
funny and likeable, which is the opposite of what that character
usually is in films. Ethan had the best death as well, actually
making me cringe. Everyone else was really obnoxious and needed
to die. Except for Trent Haaga, he could've stuck around
for longer. A lot of the funny wasn’t, but some of it was spot
on.
There’s a masturbation scene in the beginning but that’s pretty
much it for the nudity.
If you like indies give this a shot, it’s only 86 minutes long
and the filmmakers obviously enjoyed themselves. If you have no
patience for anything that smacks of low budget then avoid this.
