Cronos is the story of a strange device that has the ability to prolong life indefinitely, but as with all eternal life scenarios in horror, playing with the Cronos device is not without its consequences.

The device was created by an alchemist/watchmaker who had found the secret to eternal life. The Cronos device was found 400 years after its invention, only after the alchemist was killed in a horrible building collapse (hey not even an everlasting life device can save ya from a good squishing!)

Welcome to the present day where we have an old antiquities dealer, named Jesus Gris who stumbles upon the device hidden in a statue in his shop. After the dealer finds the Cronos device, he's "bitten" by it, and learns that after being bitten he starts looking and feeling younger. However he’s now got an unquenchable thirst, and a new aversion to sunlight. (wonder where that idea came from?)

Only problem is, the terminally ill Dieter de la Guardia knows about the Cronos device and has been searching for it for nearly 40 years, and is especially anxious to get his hands on it knowing that he doesn’t have much life left in him. Dieter sends his nephew Angel, played by Ron Perlman (Blade II, Hellboy) out to get the device by any means necessary.

I enjoyed the movie, it’s not a great movie, there’s nothing that makes it stand out above or beyond any other decent horror movie, it’s a strict middle of the road, run of the mill horror flick that was done pretty well by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro (director of Blade II and Hellboy) in his early filmmaking days, I’m pretty sure this is del Toro’s first movie. There’s a little blood and gore that’s done pretty good, there’s no nudity barring the naked backside view of some poor bastard who’s been hung upside down for the purpose of bloodletting.

One more thing to note before I wrap up, this movie is about 90% Spanish, with the remaining 10% being English. The only English lines are delivered by Perlman’s Angel character and his uncle. I hate subtitles, but I weathered this one out and ended up not minding it so much, worthy of a rent, but I am glad that I didn’t buy it instead. Check it out, especially if subtitles don’t bother you.
