The
small and remote resort of Paradise Islands has a problem. No,
it's not the guests, nor the staff of half asses that work
there. It's not even the founder of the resort, Coconut Pete.
But it might be the local legend of Machete Phil. Phil, a man
years ago tricked into having sex with a fresh corpse and then
chopped off his own penis then went crazy after his sexual encounter
and killed all the counselors on the Costa Rican island for revenge,
is said to still be roaming the jungles near the resort. Soon
the employees of the resort become victims in a killer's
plan for revenge, but is it Machete Pete or someone else?
Brought to you by the folks of Broken Lizard, Club Dread
is a horror spoof that gets it right. Most spoofs are more comedy
than horror, however Club Dread is a horror movie with
some comedy, that’s never unrealistic or way over the top.
The story itself is a great horror cliché movie, but done really
well, with excellent plot twists and full of surprises as you
keep guessing who is the killer. The gore is high and flowing
as there is always a throat, gut or face to be slashed. There
is also ample T&A provided by the two female leads Jenny (Brittany
Daniel) and Penelope (Jordan Ladd) not to mention assorted boobs
and ass provided by the many guests of the resort.
The cast is also fantastic. Bill Paxton stars as Coconut Pete,
a washed up singer who is just partying up his last days. Paxton
oozes charisma as the straggly haired Jimmy Buffet knock off.
The rest of the cast is made up of the members of Broken Lizard
who also wrote and directed the movie. Steve Lemme (Juan), Jay
Chandrasekhar (Putman), Paul Soter (Dave), Erik Stolhanske (Sam),
and Kevin Hefferman (Lars) must be given props for their hilarious
and faithful horror movie. Sam Lennie who plays Dirk provides
some of the biggest laughs in the film, the best being a comment
in the pool that had me crying for ten minutes, although he is
not a member of the comedy troupe.
From the songs to the sets to the slasher, I really enjoyed this
movie, it all comes together so well. After watching Club Dread,
I refilled the Kool-Aid pitcher and immediately sat down for another
viewing, something I have not done in along time. I highly recommend
this one for everybody, I really don't think you will be
disappointed. This film is great and I loved it, tomorrow it will
be in my personal collection. A must see.

Yeah,
this one's a keeper. Horror comedy is a difficult genre to
pull off to begin with, because the two styles of filmmaking are
diametrically opposed to one another. Horror requires pacing and
establishment of mood, whereas comedy actually bases most of its'
impact on quick wit and unexpected, fast paced visual humor.
Yet "Club Dread" wonderfully succeeds on both levels.
Take out the laughs, and you're left with a decent - if standard
- slasher flick. Take out the gore, and you have a balls -to -the
- wall, funny - as - hell comedic romp.
I'm a fan of Bill Paxton anyway, have been ever since Weird
Science - but damned if he isn't the scene stealer in
this movie. That's saying a lot , considering that the Broken
Lizard troupe- the same funny-off-the-charts motherfuckers who
gave us Super Troopers - appear en masse in this film.
A terrific example of comedic horror done right, "Club Dread"
admirably honors the conventions of the slasher genre while simultaneously
providing a kings ransom in well earned belly laughs.
Ten out of Ten times I used waa-aay too many hyphens to emphasize
a descriptive statement in this review.
