Blood Drive
America's best short horror films.
Reviewed by WL Paynecraft

Blood Drive is brought to us by Fangoria. Fangoria held a contest to see who could make the best horror short story. This dvd, which is hosted by Rob Zombie, represents the winners of this contest. There are seven short stories, and they average about ten minutes long.

I was going to talk a little about each one, but I figured that would be overkill. This is because each 10-minute story can be pretty accurately described in a sentence or two, and I don’t want to be so specific as to ruin the originality of this dvd for you.

Some of the stories really have a flair for style. At ten minutes a hit, that’s really all you have time for. Great sound effects and music tracks add to the ambience. One in particular has Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata in it, which is a personal fave of the ‘Craftster, and sure to be overused before too long. A lot of the stories also rely on dream like sequences (sped up or slowed down) that convey a sense of alienation and tend to be quite effective. You use what you have access to.

These people are like you and I, and you can see it in some respects. There isn’t much budget and most of the acting is suspect. What gore you see is pretty good though, and yes, there is even a little bit of skin. What they do have is passion. You can tell that they are serious about their projects and take a lot of pride in them. That’s what counts, in my book.

One drawback of this 10-minute format is that there is very little chance of getting pulled into the plot. This is because the audience, as well as the story creator knows that you just don’t have a chance to get anything of great substance really going. Some of it is quite entertaining nonetheless. “Song of the Dead” is a great example of this, in its own special way.

All in all, this is a pretty good outing. A couple of the stories were a little slow, and you didn’t realize what was going on until the very end. Sobeit. I really like what Fangoria did though. The horror genre doesn’t get enough respect nowadays, with Hollywood cranking out big budget shit fests and the masses flocking to watch these movies under false pretenses. It’s good to see genuinous and effort. There is definitely some potential here. Anyway, I will get off of my Natural Light case box that I set up beside my computer desk now.

Check it out, it’s inspiring. I give it 5 out of 10 easter eggs I couldn’t find, though I didn’t look too terribly hard.
