A
meteor falls to Earth an old man walks out checks out what fell
from the sky, a minute later the oozing red spacemass that is
the blob is on the loose and headed towards town, eating everything
in it's path. In steps our loner teen hero, Steve Andrews, who
tries to tell everyone what he has seen heading towards them,
but as usual nobody listens until it is too late. Now with the
blob growing in size how can Steve and the local police stop the
Blob?
The
original and remake both follow the same core story, rock falls
to earth, old man pokes it, out comes goo and devours everything.
So the remake does honor the classic, it just has more gore and
better effects and acting.
This
version does, however, star Steve McQueen in his first major role,
looking and acting like a James Dean rip-off. McQueen does show
his future tough guy image off in this film quite well. My biggest
problem with this film is when McQueen's character begins to doubt
what he may have seen, it just doesn't fit after what the character
has seen up to that point.
Although
made in 1958, the effects are pretty good considering the creature
and the time period, the highlight is when the blob attacks a
theater full of moviegoers. Full of standard early horror movies
clichés and a very simplistic ending, the Blob does leave
an impression and is a pretty good horror/sci-fi movie mix and
it also features the debut of a future screen legend, if you have
never seen the original check it out, but both the classic and
the original are fairly good films.
Inspired
by 1wingedangel's review of the remake, your old buddy the Prime
had to go and dig up a copy of the classic and put in the review
of the original for those of you not in the know.
