Beyond the Darkness
A fate worse than death!
Reviewed by BQueen

Franco can’t deal with the fact that his wife has died. Luckily Franco is a twisted freak and also a taxidermist! He digs her up and brings her home, picking up a hitchhiker along the way. Then we are treated to the sight of him ripping his wife’s innards out. The hitchhiker wakes up and notices and freaks out in typical fashion so Franco must kill her. The kicker is he stops strangling her to pull her nails out with pliers then finishes strangling her.

Franco also has a crazy housekeeper, Iris, who is more than a little obsessed with him. She helps him dress his now stuffed wife and put her to bed and does the dismembering of the hitchhiker while Franco makes hitchhiker soup with acid in the bathtub. Franco goes deeper and deeper into a guilty madness with Iris gleefully helping him along the way. Killings abound until the local mortician figures out what’s going on and puts a stop to it with a little help from an unexpected source.

If you like Italian horror you must watch this movie. Stop reading right now and go get it. This is the most disgusting gag-inducing movie I have ever seen. I loved it!

The gore is some of the most realistic I have ever seen. When Franco is disemboweling his wife I was trying to figure out just how they made it look so real. When they are making hitchhiker soup I was impressed but when they poured her into a hole in the ground I was gagging at the sounds. Then when Iris is eating something (I think it might have been hitchhiker) you get a full on close up of her mouth chomping and slurping which made me gag again. This is just part of the gore, I want to give you enough that you’ll be intrigued but I won’t give it all away.

I read somewhere that the director actually had to go to court to prove he didn’t use real dead bodies in making this movie.

Of course it has it‘s faults. There’s cheesy dialogue and bad acting and some parts seem to drag out forever. If you’re a fan of Italian horror this shouldn’t dissuade you. This film was directed by Joe D’Amato so that should tell some of you something.

I highly recommend this. It’s not going to be for everyone but for those of you who are into this kind of thing I think you’ll really enjoy it.

7 out of 10 times I said, “If he’s a taxidermist shouldn’t he have a crematorium? Oh wait there it is.”

This was a good movie. It picked up in the second half of the film, compared to the first half. Good gore. The close up of Iris eating was revolting. Lots of skin in the flick too.

On a side note, wouldn't it be nice to have a pal like Iris around? When you are sad, she will lend you a breast to suck on. When you are down and discouraged she will administer a hand job to make it all better. All this and she helps you bury your victims in the backyard. True loyalty. Having said that, she was really creepy.

All the characters in this movie were weird. The main guy seemed all right initially, but of course was severely fucked up. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but was there a voodoo element to this flick? Strange mechanism for an Italian horror flick.

This movie had a unique element of making me feel depressed and disgusted. Two great tastes that don't really go great together.

Overall, this is one of those classic weird Italian horror flicks that you always hear about. If you are into this kinda thing, go get it. I give it 6.5 out of 10 wildly reckless hitchhikers.
