A
couple accidentally bring back an evil Baron who enjoyed torturing
and executing people while alive. Now back, and kinda zombified,
he continues his sadistic hobbies.
An interesting little flick that just never seems to deliver on
what it promises. It's eerie, the settings are beautiful, the
acting was done well, I just didn't get into the story. It was
odd and just didn't appeal to me. Evil Baron's coming back to
torture people a little. Sounds too Universal Monsters to me,
if it had been made twenty or thirty years earlier I'd have called
it an amazing film. Even ten years and I'd have been more impressed,
but it wasn't, it was in the early seventies, and when you compare
it to what else was being made, I think it's naive and childish.
People can rant and rave about Bava all they like, I love Italian
cinema and trash cinema, but Mario Bava flicks were designed to
make money from the misleading posters. He was selling shocks
like the exploitation flicks of the fifties, and like them, not
delivering. I can respect that and sometimes enjoy that, but putting
him into a catagory with Fulci or Argento isn't acceptable from
what I've seen.
It's not a bad story, though, I've just seen so much better from
names much less famous. The plot was acceptable and became interesting
as it went on, but again, I didn't care about anyone in the movie
and hoped they'd all be tortured to death. I was dissappointed.
The torture is tame, the gore is minimal, no skin and no real
scares as far as I'm concerned.
