Blood

Reviewed by GeneralCinema

You play as Caleb, who was in an evil cult called The Cabal. You were assassinated for your activities and rise from the grave seventy-seven years later, and as you go on your quest for answers, vengeance will be yours.

Ok, first let me say that calling this game violent is a major understatement. This game was made by some of the most sadistic people on the planet and it is highly recommended for any FPS-lover or Horror fan.

As Caleb, you walk around shooting, stabbing, burning, or blowing up anything that moves. Your first weapon is a pitchfork, and every other weapon in this game is just as unconventional, with the exception of dynamite. You can also get power-ups that give you two weapons at once, and just about every weapon has a secondary firing mechanism, so you get that much more destructive happiness.

The settings are one of the best things of the game. There are some really sick things that this game produces visually. From Phantasm to the works of H.P. Lovecraft and others, just about everything you've seen in horror movies makes in into this masterpiece. My friend and I were playing a deathmatch and had to stop because the level that we were in was freaked us out after a while. It was reminiscent of Camp Crystal Lake, complete with Jason's Theme!

The enemies are just as much of a homage to horror movies as everything else in this game. You fight zombies, cult members, disembodied hands, rats, demons, gargoyles, etc. There's just so much horror goodness in this game that it's almost hard to write this review.

One little nice touch the is when you don't move your character at all, he starts to sing show-tunes ranging from Puttin' on the Ritz to The Good Ship Lollipop.

This brings me to the sounds of the game. There are some completely terrifying moments that this game produces from the sound alone. You'll hear demonic chanting, zombies grunting, rats squeaking, and things like that. I dare anyone to play this in the wee hours of the morning and not feel scared.

The difficulty is pretty good. Sometimes, even on easy settings, you get horded by enemies, which adds to the survival aspect. Difficulty aside, I always play this game with cheat codes. Not because it's that hard, but because I'm a pussy and there are parts of this game that scare the shit out of me. The cheat codes also add to the destruction.

Blood was originally for DOS, but most systems today should be able to run it.

If you love horror, get this game. This is NOT a request.
