The Zombie Survival Guide
Complete Protection from the Living Dead
BOOKS
Reviewed by The Horrorist

An actual, comprehensive survival guide for that time we’re all preparing for… when the zombies come! Written as educational material to help you prepare your home, vehicle, body and mind for the ensuing struggle against the walking dead and the virus that causes them, this book gives you your best chance of being around to re-seed the earth with humanity.

Without a hint of silliness at any point, intentionally dry and factual, this book is a joy for true-believers from cover to cover. I just planned to have a look, being nearly at the end of another book when I got this one, but after a couple pages I just read it all.

Starting with how to prepare your home, stockpiles of food, water, weapons and miscellany, not only is the book wildly entertaining but quite reasonable.

As a bit of a survivalist (not the racist, religious, psychotic kind, just the slightly paranoid but damn sexy kind) this book is based on reality in all aspects other than the existence of zombies, and for that we can always hope.

The book is labeled as “humor” but it’s at no point even mildly funny and not meant to be. For non-horror fans I think that’s the only way the book can be justified. I’ve read many online reviews where people talk about how “hilarious” this book is because it’s written so seriously.

Clearly the people who say this don’t really understand the word “hilarious”, which isn’t at all shocking. Few really use words correctly anymore, if the book were truly hilarious in it’s seriousness (something I don’t think is actually possible), that would mean that after reading it solemnly, a person might burst into a fit of laughter over the stern tone of the book. That’s unlikely, son of Mel Brooks or not.

Anyway, it’s not humorous, it’s a damned entertaining piece of fiction mixed with actual survival information put together in a clever package.

What I’m saying is it’s a must-read for any zombie lover, even if you don’t like reading, consider it a manual for when the time comes. Also it’s filled with insight into zombie outbreaks and the like that can really make you think back on some of the great movies and such. Beyond that, it’s somewhat creepy at times, if you’re like me and consider the real possibility of some “End of the world as we know it” scenarios and let your mind run with the ideas presented.

On the other hand, if you’re not completely into zombies or survivalism, I can’t imagine you even finding this book more than a little interesting.

10 out of 10 times I rethought my personal preparedness because of this book

(2003) Max Brooks
