Mama's Boy
BOOKS
Reviewed by BQueen

Mama’s Boy is a story about, well, a boy and his mama. To be more precise it’s about a sick twisted woman who made her son into an insane twisted freak. Just how horribly bent they both were is being related to a psychologist in a mental institution who is determined to get “Frank Doe” to tell her just what his mama did to him and what exactly he’s done to the bodies of numerous women.

This little gem of a novella from author Fran Friel is a quick read but that doesn’t lessen its impact one bit. It’s a deeply disturbing creepfest thats guaranteed to keep you thinking about it long after you put it down (or throw it across the room shrieking.)

I met Fran on myspace and even in that superficial fickle world I was struck by how nice she is. Fran’s one to always have something pleasant to say, she replies to everyone who comments on her blog, you get the idea. She’s just a really nice lady. Well after reading this book I’ve got to admit I’m a little bit afraid of Fran now. I mean that in the nicest possible way of course.

The book is also wonderfully illustrated by Tom Moran and Zach McCain. The full color pictures are enough to give you nightmares for days and make you more disturbed than you already are.

After reading this and also some of Fran’s short stories I’m looking forward to reading more of her work. I’ll just make sure I do so in the daytime with the lights on… better make sure I’m not home alone either. Just to be on the safe side.

(2006) Fran Friel
