Welcome to the Wagner Institute for Mental Treatment and Investigations. Since 1966, Dr. Johann Wagner has guided his team of paranormal investigators and psychologists in solving supernatural crimes and unlocking the secrets of the human mind.

But now a horror from his past has come back to destroy not only Wagner, but everything he has built. Wagner once used his paranormal powers to escape the horrors of the Holocaust, but can his aging mind and body stop the terror that has returned to claim him?

This book was fantastic. It's written as a series of journal entries which recounts Dr. Wagner's youth and experiences in honing his abilities and his life in the concentration camps.

Peter A. Balaskas is an amazing writer, and I'd love to see more from him. This book pulls you in completely and he uses very a vivid description of the mental abilites used.

This book is a very easy read and moves really quickly. You can almost experience everything that Johann is going through in the book. Mostly a psychological thriller, the horror in the book lies mostly in the Holocaust.

Throughout the book, we are introduced to Johann's friends and family, whom he loves dearly, and they are taken away from us by the atrocities committed in the camps. Also there are some nightmares that are experienced with some of the other prisoners, but the horrors there were mostly hinted at.

My favorite parts of the book were when Johann was developing his powers, and the confrontation with the SS Colonel. There is also a very prominent chess theme throughout the book, which works well with the storyline. I did think the ending could have been better, but after thinking about how everything transpired in the book, it did make sense to me.

I would highly recommend this to everybody. As I stated before, it's a very easy read and the story pulls you in very quickly.

8 out of 10
