The Farm

Katy Logan is bound and determined to make a new life for herself and her daughter. She’s married a new man and moved to a small rural community and will be a good wife and homemaker even if it kills her. Of course the ghost of her new husband’s late wife may just have that in mind. Her daughter, Jett, is less than thrilled by the whole thing but has agreed to give it a try and stay out of trouble. Too bad the entire town is trouble what with all the goats deciding to be carnivores, the scarecrows moving around in search of blood, and an undead preacher roaming the hills for sacrifice.

Got anything against scarecrows and goats? (You should, they’re freaking creepy!) If you don’t you will by the time you finish this book.

For me, the whole did-that-scarecrow-just-move? scenario was the most frightening, although I wouldn’t want to come under the gaze of a herd of goats anytime soon. I actually liked the undead preacher Harmon Smith, also known as the Circuit Rider. He was scary but he had an agenda. As long as you weren’t on it you were pretty much ok, well unless you died of fright while seeing him.

Scott Nicholson has crafted an intricate story that forces you to pay attention. There are so many different dangers coming at you that you would think it would be just too much. Scott’s storytelling ability is in fine form here as he weaves all the threads together with aplomb; giving you loads of character development and tension building but never taking it too far. There’s no boredom to be found in these pages; I was completely riveted from the ghostly beginning to the supernatural smackdown ending.

Scott’s books make me want to move to a sleepy rural town and have unexplained things happen to me. Or maybe happen to other people and I could just watch. Either way, it would prove interesting.

(2006) Scott Nicholson
