Regan's a young lady with the usual problems. She's had a messy breakup, is unemployed in a new town, living with her brother, and is in love with a lady who happens to be straight. She's also got to contend with a legion of walking corpses.

The zombie threat happens pretty early on in the book and it's hinted that it's much worse than when we are introduced to it, since the police department has a message telling you not to go near "untalkative assailants." The story follows two primary characters - Regan and Alisia. Regan came to Autar to live with her scientist brother, and Alisia is the head, and only living member left, of the AIT (Autar Inflitration Troup). When Alisia's newest partner gets killed she meets up with Regan, who has been surviving in the city for two years on her own.

What's interesting about these zombies is that your standard head-shot doesn't kill them right away. It's easier to take out their legs or shoot their heads off and let the bodies decay from there. Personally, I like traditional zombies a bit better. Also, the zombie virus is a program in the nanobots. The nanobots are used for other things in the book as well, and since they're a prominent player in the book, we do learn a little bit more of them and I liked the direction the author was taking with them.

One thing that was a little unnecessary was the "Infodumps" scattered throughout the book. These infodumps give you information on people and things in the book. These work kind of work kind of like "notes in the margin," but the story would have flowed better if they were incorporated into it.

The book is full of typos. There are quite a bit in here and, while the story flows nicely, seeing words spelled correctly helps maintain that flow. When you have to stop and comprehend a word that's spelled incorrectly and then think about what the word SHOULD be, it takes you out of the story. This book also has also a lot of incomplete sentences and incorrect punctuation. Better editing would have made a huge difference.

Another gripe is that Regan's attitude is way too upbeat for surviving in a zombie infested city for two years. Here’s someone who is beyond hope in a city infested by zombies. She learns how to use weapons and becomes very resourceful, but when she’s reintroduced to people it’s like she’s a part of society again. If you were stuck in a zombie infested city for two years and you developed specific routines to just stay alive these routines stay with you even when you’re reintroduced into society. Sure there were some moments where she almost broke down, but ultimately this was not portrayed well.

The book also has some MAJOR lesbian themes. This doesn't really bother me, but I'd prefer more character development than what was done. Primarily we get a lesbian constantly hitting on a straight woman. The dialogue was done really well and gives you some laugh-out-loud moments as well as lots of profanity.

Since this book is partially about lesbians, some lesbian sex scenes would have been very welcome. We get an aftermath of hetero-sex and a couple of lesbian kisses. That’s all.

This is Joseph Picard's first book, and while he has some very good intentions (the zombie creating nanobots are a really good idea) he's still got a lot of room to grow. The plot is decent and the story isn't too bad, and while the dialogue can be funny at times can also be juvenile.

This brings me to the descriptions of the zombie chaos. I feel that this book was not as descriptive as it could have been. Sure we do get some good descriptions but there were scenes which I felt were left a little vague. Maybe it’s just me.

This isn’t really a bad book, sure it’s got its flaws but the plot and story is good. The delivery just has to be worked on. From what I read on Joseph Picard’s blog, he’s going to do doing some rewrites. Hopefully this will bring some much needed improvements.

I’m giving it a 5 out of 10

(2007) Joseph Picard
