Bill Moseley
Written by jareprime

The following is a series of short interviews that I got to conduct with Bill Moseley from as far back as August of 2004. Through constant hounding and numerous convention appearances and even phone calls, I was finally able to get all of my questions answered by the man himself. I kept putting off posting interviews until the release of Devil’s Rejects, with that a few days off, I finally present the entire series in one complete form. Known to many as Choptop from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Otis Driftwood from House of 1,000 Corpses, Bill Moseley is my hero of horror and talking to him has been my fanboy’s wet dream and it was a blast. Thanks Bill.

Jareprime: I have been wondering what is the connection between your character Choptop and the hitchhiker character from the first Texas Chainsaw? On our web site, HorrorWatch.com we have all kinds of debates, same person, brothers, what’s the answer?

Bill Moseley: We are twins. In fact the corpse that I drag around is actually his body and it was cast from my own image.

JP: Now the truth is known.

BM: Did you know that the poster was a spoof of the Breakfast Club?

JP: No and now that you say it, it is pretty obvious. You got he chance to work on TCM2 from a video spoof right?

BM: Yup, the Texas Chainsaw Manicure, a little movie we shot and Tobe cast me in the role of Choptop.

JP: How did you get the mannerisms and the look so down pat, to me you could almost pass as Edwin Neal himself.

BM: I’m just a fan, and really liked the movie and was lucky enough to do a decent impersonation.

JP: What about the rumored sequel, An American Massacre, which would have seen Chop going across the country hacking and slashing?

BM: It’s been talked about for a long time and Tobe’s son may be doing something with it soon, but if it does happen.

JP: How much did you get to add to Chop’s personality, any improv?

BM: Tons of improv, we just ran with whatever worked, a lot of my lines like “Lick my plate you dog dick”, and some of the stuff I pulled off in the radio station were all on the spot sayings.

JP: How did the make-up influence your performance?

BM: Tom Savini’s make-up let me really get into the role, you can really lose yourself and let go, it’s like looking in a warped mirror.

JP: I love the interaction between all of the Sawyer brothers, it seemed like you guys had a lot of fun making the film, was this true?

BM: Yeah, absolutely, me and Bill had to wear the make-up and masks so we shared a lot of heat related problems and Jim Siedow was just as fun as it could be to work with.

JP: What was it like to say the line “They’re coming to get you Barbara!” in the Night of the Living Dead remake?

BM: Once again a dream made real that was another dream role, short, but very satisfying.

JP: What do you think of remakes on the whole? I mean you were in the NOLD remake and they did remake the TCM.

BM: They remade TCM? Just kidding, hey it’s gonna happen, the classics are just that, but sometimes a little change can be good, not always but sometimes.

JP: What can we expect in The Devil’s Rejects?

BM: Darker, grittier, bloodier and realer.

JP: A little away from straight horror?

BM: Yes and no. It does not have some of the fantasy of dream like attributes of House of 1,000 Corpses, but it does have the gore and the blood.

JP: Is everyone back on board for the sequel?

BM: The same characters show up but we have two different actors this time around playing Mother and RJ.

JP: How is Otis related to the Firefly clan or is he?

BM: Otis is not a blood relative to any of them, he just kinda sticks around, you see Mother Firefly is kinda, well she is a whore, and uhm Otis just seemed to be able to stick around and become part of the family.

JP: What about Captain Spaulding?

BM: There will be a a lot dropped about him and his ties to the Firefly’s in the sequel, one might surprise a lot of people.

JP: Wanna give me an exclusive on that?

BM: No, no, wait, it will be worth it.

JP: Otis compared to Choptop what is the differences or similarities?

BM: Otis is meaner, more methodical; Chop is quicker more prone to immediate pleasures if you will, Otis is going to have fun, like a cat playing with a mouse.

JP: Was the baby in the jar Otis’s and mother Firefly’s?

BM: Little Wolfie? Hard to say it could be I guess, never really thought about it much.

JP: Who would win in a fight, Otis or Chop?

BM: I guess I would have to kick my own ass in that one huh. I’m not sure, probably who ever was better armed, but it would be a hell of a scrap.

JP: How about Otis and Chop in a buddy movie? That has blockbuster written all over it.

BM: I’d do it in a second.

JP: Anything you wanna plug or announce for your fans?

BM: Check out the new Corn Bugs CD and my website at www.choptopsbbq.com and make sure to get out and see The Devil’s Rejects in July now.

JP: Thanks man, I really appreciate the time.

BM: Not a problem, by the way Jarrett...

JP: Yeah?

BM: Lick my plate you dog dick!

In closing, I wanna say how cool it was to talk to Mr. Moseley on any occasion. At no time does he push you aside and he is very willing to talk to a fan or take a pic with you, a truly all around cool guy. Be sure to check out Bill's website: Choptop's BBQ for more.
